The MP3 format(not to be confused with MPEG3) is a comressed sound file format that permits 1 12-fold compression of a
normal audio file without loss of sound quality. By eliminating bandwiths whose frequencies are inaudible by the human ear, a 4-minute , CD quality audio recording(stereo, 44.1 KHz, 16 bits) which wouls use 50 MB
under WAVE format, takes no more than 4 MB using MP3 without any sound degradation. It is this important advantage which has given MP3 its present-day success. But the reason why this format has been the focus of much
discussion recently is that it raises important questions related to copyright. Even if nothing stops you from downloading MP3 files for strictly personal use, you cannot legally conserve them for more than 24
hours on your hard disk without owning the original media. Moreover, once you make your files available to another party, you have fallen into completely illegal territory. The artists, composers and
labels or any other intermediaries will not receive any copyright fees that they would normally have a right to. We have many concerns with this format, it is obviuosly taking away the potential income from small
independent Freestyle labels. This format is strictting our freedom to produce and release better Freestyle songs. |

- MP3
(MPEG AUDIO LAYER-3):
A
format which was developed by the Fraunhofer Institute of Germany. Development began in 1987 and the first uniquely MP3 software became available little over 3 years ago.
- MPEG
(MOVING PICTURES EXPERT GROUP):
A working group of a sub-committee of ISO (International Standard Organization) and IEC (International electrotechnical Commission)
which created this audio and video compressin standard. There are 3 sub-levels of audio encoding in the MPEG-1 and MPEG-2 formats: Layer-1, Layer-2 and Layer-3. MP3 is not the same thing as MPEG-3. MP3, MPEG Audio
Layer-3 is only the audio-encoding component of the MPEG standard. |
